I cut up the CDs from my past. I collected them in abundance, like memories from a time when they were relevant. These discs are filled with nostalgia and history. The songs on the albums can transport me back in time, evoking memories of people, places, and feelings— good and bad. The struggle of cutting up this media, which I once held dear, feels raw and heartbreaking. I remind myself that memories aren’t tied to physical media and can’t be scratched or made to skip. I incorporate these fragments into my art to move on from the past.
I draw inspiration from songs and lyrics that resonate deep within my soul. I often reflect on the lyric, “darkness gathers around the light,” especially when I think about music and disco balls. Much of this artwork addresses the mental health struggles of depression and anxiety that surround your inner light. My use of disco balls represents the effort to maintain that inner light in dark times, with music serving as a means to help escape from those shadows.
